4 years 6 months each for two men who stole a cell phone and other items

The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court today.
Daniel Prince,18 and Donovan Richardson,21 admitted that on May 15th at Hadfield Street, Georgetown, they robbed Osafo Hill of a cell phone and other items totaling $56,000.
The men were unrepresented. However, Richardson told the court “Somebody took the thing away from the man and I thief it back from them.”

 Police Prosecutor Arwin Moore told the court on the day in question, the victim was walking along Hadfield Street when he was approached by the two defendants. Moore added that the accused punched Hill and snatched his cell phone along with the other items, the men then made good their escape. He said the men were later arrested by the police with the stolen items in their possession.
The men were both sentenced to 4 years 6 months each in prison for the offence.

Police cadet officer walks free, 4 years after shooting 15-year-old teen in the mouth

Four years after he was accused of shooting a 15-year-old in his mouth, Police Cadet Officer Franz Paul had those charges discharged based on advice from the Director of Public Prosecutor.

The young officer was on trial for discharging a loaded firearm at then 15-year-old Alex Griffith with the intent to maim, disable, disfigure or cause him grievous bodily harm.

Reports are that the parties had agreed to a $2 million settlement as compensation which was paid to Griffith.
The charges were not pursued on order of the DPP after the victim, Griffith accepted the compensation and will not be providing evidence against Paul in the matter.

Reports are to Paul came to the aid of his sister who was robbed in the East La Penitence Area. Griffith was arrested by a patrol in the area and a gun placed in his mouth by Paul. The teenager was hospitalised for some time as he received treatment for the gunshot wound to this mouth.

Linden man remanded for  murder of taxi driver in a triangle love affair

The suspect, Corwyn Arthur called ‘Cross Eye’,  appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse in the Linden Magistrates’ court this morning, where the indictable charge of murder was read to him.
On May 10th, Arthur stabbed Claude DeJonge to death.

Dejonge was the reputed husband of Arthur’s paramour. The incident happened at their home in Cinderella City, Amelia’s Ward, Linden. The murder was allegedly committed in front of the woman Arthur shared a relationship with, prior to the woman moving on with DeJonge. He also threatened to take the woman’s life.
He was remanded to prison until June, 21st.
The man went on the run after the incident and was arrested by the Police in a house at Bennett Dam, Rosignol Village, West Coast Berbice last Thursday.

Update on Linden accident; driver succumbs

Driver in the Soesdyke/Linden smash up succumbs moments ago.
The woman, Shenella Hughes never regained consciousness while she was hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital. This is the third member of the family to succumb to their injuries following the May 13th smash up on the  Soesdyke/ Linden Highway.
 Her six-year-old daughter, Arianna Hughes passed away on Sunday, while the father of her children, Quintin Odle died on Wednesday. Hughes eldest daughter and her nephew are still hospitalised.

Linden smash up claims another life, while the driver of the car remains unconscious

Quintin Odle 42, of 134 Blankenburg, West Coast Demerara became the 2nd victim to succumb to his injuries following that May, 13th Smash up on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway. His 6-year-old daughter, Arianna Hughes was the first fatality, while her mother remains unconscious and other siblings are said to be recovering from the injuries they sustained.  A relative told this newscast that the woman is showing signs of improvement and her brain activities have improved a bit.
A total of 26 persons were injured in the accident, following a head-on collision between a route 42 mini-bus and a Car.
The injured were transferred to the GPHC, where Hughes succumbed to her injuries. Her dad who was also a patient at the hospital succumbed late Wednesday afternoon.
There are reports that after the collision, both vehicles toppled several times before coming to a stop and Both vehicles were badly damaged. There are reports that the driver of the car swerved and ended up in the path of the mini-bus. The Police are continuing their investigation.

Fisherman stabbed 10 times about his body, succumbs in boat cabin. Police in Berbice are probing the murder of a fisherman, while his assailant is said to be on the run. The incident occurred at number 65 village, Fishery, on the Corentyne Berbice this afternoon. Dead is Davanand Jailall, 38, of lot 578 Block 8 Agriculture Road, East Coast Demerara. There are reports that the suspect and the man had an argument which escalated and ended deadly. This newscast understands that the deceased was allegedly smoking cocaine in the cabin of the boat both men worked on, while he was cooking rice. He was cautioned by the suspect and he reportedly refused, the suspect then dealt him several stab wounds about his body. The man was reportedly stabbed 10 times. The suspect then dropped the knife in the boat and made good his escape. The body is presently at the Skeldon Hospital mortuary.

6 months behind bars for a bicycle and car battery thief 

A Sophia man today opted to spend six months behind bars for the theft of a bicycle and a car battery.

The man Troy Joseph who appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Fabayo Azore admitted to the offence. Joseph told that court that on April 28th at Lamaha Gardens he stole a bicycle valued at $13,000 and a car battery valued at $35,000, the property of Joseph Innis. According to the man, he was charged with similar offences in the past.

Magistrate Azore in her ruling fined the man $50,000 or six months in jail should he fail to pay the fine, to that the man responded that he would rather serve the jail sentence.
