There has been much commentary on the renewal of the contract between the Guyana Power and Light Inc. and UCC JV with Karpowership.
I would like to assure the public that the Government of Guyana is working in the best interests of the people of Guyana to get the best possible commercial rate for the renewal of the contract.
I want to reassure the population that no power outage is occurring due to a lack of power generation. Rather, there may be power outages due to maintenance of the power grid and interruptions caused by private contractors.
We continue to be in the negotiation process, while the powership maintains an uninterrupted supply of electricity to the national grid.
The public will be apprised at the appropriate time on the completion of the contractual negotiations between the Guyana Power and Light Inc. and UCC JV with Karpowership.
Wanted Duo Turns Themselves In, Arrested in Firearm Probe
Two men who were recently wanted by police in connection with the alleged possession of an unlicensed firearm surrendered to authorities on Thursday and were immediately taken into custody.
Police said Gregory Anthony Persaud, known as “Greg,” a 21-year-old wash bay attendant of Lot 1034 Farm, New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, and Antonio Alonzo Lawrie, called “Lanzo,” a 33-year-old businessman and owner of a wash bay at Lot 959 Farm, New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, turned themselves in at the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters on Vlissengen Road, Georgetown.
The pair arrived at the police headquarters, accompanied by their attorney-at-law, after wanted bulletins had been issued for their arrest in relation to the offence of possession of a firearm without a licence.
Police said the two men were subsequently arrested and placed into custody. Investigations into the matter remain ongoing.
The arrests come just one week after a 33-year-old taxi driver was remanded to prison following the discovery of 10 AK-47 rifles during a police operation along the No. 11 Village Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.

The accused, Stephen Rajah of Back Street, Goed Fortuin Village, West Bank Demerara, appeared before the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court, where he was charged with possession of firearms. He was not required to enter a plea and was remanded to prison until June 15, 2026.
According to investigators, ranks attempted to stop a black Toyota Fielder Wagon near the Berbice River Bridge Access Road during the early hours of Friday morning. The driver reportedly fled the scene.
Acting on information received, police later recovered 10 rifles wrapped in plastic and cloth. The weapons reportedly bore markings consistent with 7.62x39mm AK-47 rifles, while investigators suspect that the serial numbers had been tampered with.
Police subsequently identified Rajah as the driver of the vehicle and later intercepted him at Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, where he was taken into custody.
