30 in custody as Police in Suriname continue to probe the deadly pirate attack
The news was relayed during a joint press conference with the Surinamese Minister of Justice and Police and Guyana’s Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan Monday afternoon.
News from a local online website said the authorities in Suriname could not say much about the identity of the fishermen who were victims of the brutal attack at sea at the end of April. “We do not even know for sure if there are 20 victims. It has been reported that a boat normally counts five crew members. But it is not yet certain, if it actually involved twenty people who were supposedly on board the four boats that were attacked, “said Minister Stuart Getrouw of Justice and Police.
The identities of the remains recovered are still unknown at this time. The Guyanese Minister of Public Security and two senior Police officers made the trip to Suriname. During the trip, the minister met with fishermen and the families of the missing victims. The minister promised to exchange information about the suspects among other things.
Guyana’s Opposition leader, Bharrat Jagdeo has also made the trip to Suriname and he urged that the full force of the law be used to bring the perpetrators to justice.
A family of 10 homeless after Hadfield Street Fire
A house gutted and another scorched in a late afternoon fire at Hadfield Street and Louisa Row today. The fire reportedly started at the Hall’s residence and quickly swept through the wooden building.
No one was at home at the time of the fire. It was after the Guyana Fire Service extinguished that blaze that some of the occupants of the home began arriving to see the place they called home completely gutted.
The occupants interviewed said they losses are in the millions. A neighbour said he and other residents after seeing the raging fire decided to assist other neighbours to remove their belongings in case engulf their homes.
The Guyana Fire Service quickly contained and extinguished the fire, while the Police were out in their numbers to ensure that traffic around the area flowed smoothly. An investigation is underway to ascertain the origin of the fire

Twenty-five year old Debbie Hansraj appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Senior Magistrate Fabio Azore. At the conclusion of the preliminary inquiry, it was found that there was insufficient evidence for the matter to be referred to the High Court, Magistrate Azore then dismissed the matter against the young woman.

Debbie Hansraj was charged with killing her brother Vishal Hansraj in 2017 at their Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara home. Vishal according to the reports was stabbed twice with a knife after intervening in an argument between his sister and mother. The siblings were said to be under the influence of alcohol.
