Two prison escapees and an unidentified woman were shot dead during exchange of gunshots with the police at Better Hope Backlands

Weeks after the four convicted prisoners escaped from the Mazaruni Prison two of the four were killed during a shootout with the police at Better Hope Backlands on the East Coast of Demerara.  Dead are Imran Ramsaywack who was sentenced for murder and Ryan Jones, who was serving 28 years in prison on a manslaughter charge. The woman up to news time is still to be identified. According to a police report, ranks of the Guyana Police Force, at approximately 20:40 hrs. yesterday, acting on information, that the Mazaruni Prison escapees were hiding out at a location in the Better Hope South backlands, conducted an operation in what was described as an abandoned, bushy and swampy field.

The police report added that ranks observed three wooden shacks in the field with two partly constructed ones. The Police ranks began clearing the first shack but no one was seen. As the ranks were approaching the second shack, a voice was heard in the third shack and the ranks immediately identified themselves. A male immediately emerged and discharged a round at the Police and then ran. The Police ranks returned fire. Two males and a female were wounded and lay in the shack with gunshot injuries, whilst one male escaped.

A sawn-off double barrel shotgun was found at the scene. The Police investigations are ongoing.

Two Kaieteur News Security guards were today charged with the murder of a vagrant

The duo Troy Waldron and Yan Licorish appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan where they were not required to plea to the indictable charge.

The duo was remanded to prison until April 19th. This was following the death of 58-year-old Mohabir Singh of no fixed place of abode. The Police are reporting that Singh’s body was found on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, under a shed on the Kaieteur News premises at Saffon Street, La Penitence by a staffer of the said entity.

A post mortem performed by Dr. Nehaul Singh gave the cause of death as brain hemorrhage due to blunt trauma to the head. Attorney at Law  Latchmie Rahamat represented the duo who were charged with the murder of Singh.

16 year old charged with the murder of 10-year Sophia boy  

A 16-year-old boy appeared in the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court to answer to the charge of murder, committed on ten-year-old, Anthony Cort. The teenager appeared before Magistrate Alicia George where the indictable charge of murder was read to him. The court was told that the murder took place in the course of the furtherance of a robbery on March 11th. 10-year-old Anthony Cort was shot dead by one of two bandits who were demanding cash and jewelry while he and his mother were at a neighbours C Field Sophia home. According to the Police, the sixteen-year-old male was arrested on 12th March in relation to the murder and was today charged under Section 100 (1) (C) (i) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act Chapter 8:01. 

He was remanded to the Sophia Juvenile Holding Centre and will make his next court appearance on May 12th.  Denise Mc Pherson, Cort’s mother said they were invited to a little get-together and within minutes of their arrival, gunmen invaded the home and held them up at gunpoint. The woman said Anthony and his friend were upstairs in the bedroom playing games, totally unaware of what was taking place, and as he exited the bedroom, he was shot by the bandits and died on the spot.

 Cort attended the St Ambrose Primary School and was preparing to write the grade 6 assessment exams this August. 

Four weeks in jail for Corentyne fisherman for robbery

A Corentyne fisherman was today sentenced to four weeks in prison for robbery when he appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore via Skype. The man, Jhanjadeen Naiken, called ‘Jaga’, a 40-year-old fisherman of #36 Village Corentyne, Berbice, was charged with two counts of break and enter and larceny contrary to Section 229(a) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act Chapter 8:01.

16 year old raped

The Guyana Police Force is investigating the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl who is now pregnant. The police in a press statement said the incident occurred last year November in the the Police Regional Division #1.
