GPSU members eagerly await election results

Presidential Candidate of the Guyana Public Service Union Gregory Gaspar along with members of the union camped outside of the union office awaiting the results of yesterday’s elections. Gaspar also voiced his concern over the counting of the ballots. Gaspar is challenging incumbent Patrick Yarde for the presidency of the union. Yarde held the post for thirty years.

GPSU elections process smooth says election officer

 

 

Polls have closed for the election of new officer bears to manage the affairs of the Guyana Public Service Union. Elections Officer, Herman DeSouza said the process was smooth.

DeSouza said after a few setbacks at the start of the process the elections went according to plan. He said the results will not be known before midday tomorrow.

Over 3000 registered members of the Guyana Public Service Union were expected to cast their ballots.

The elections were delayed after executive member Gregory Gaspar filed an injunction postponing process until the executive of the union produced the treasurer’s report for the last twelve years along with the audited reports.

Gaspar is challenging incumbent Patrick Yarde for the Presidency of the union. Yarde held the post of president for the last thirty years and some members believe he should be given another chance.

 

CANU discovered undisclosed amount of drugs at abandoned house in Waterloo Street, a male arrested

Heavily arm ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit acting on a tip-off swooped down on the abandoned house in Water Street, Georgetown this afternoon and after more than 3 hours the offices came out with a black bag containing with what is suspected to be cocaine. A man who was reportedly picked up a short distance away from where the drugs were found, was taken into custody. Residents said the suspect was not from the area but is a frequent visitor to the area.

Residents also said they believed that man was under surveillance since a man suspected to be a CANU officer was seen in the area all morning.

A female was also detained during the operation, she is said to be living in the yard where the drugs were found. There are several houses in the yard.

While CANU was conducted their search at the house the Police were searching two cars on the opposite side of the road. Both vehicles were escorted to the Brickdam Police Station after the police completed their search.

 

Chef sentenced to 3 years for cocaine possession

An East Ruimveldt resident was today sentenced to three years in prison for cocaine possession when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The man, 26-year-old Anthony Gibson plead guilty to the offence and was also fined $1.4 million for the 548 grams of cocaine found in his possession. Gibson did not receive the maximum sentence because he cooperated with the police.
The prosecutor told that court that on April 24, the young man was an outgoing passenger at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport destined for the Bahamas but was stopped by lawmen because he was observed acting in a suspicious manner. It was while being questioned that the young man admitted to ingesting cocaine. At the Georgetown Public Hospital, he secreted 52 pellets. Gibson was employed a popular fast food restaurant.

BV cane cutter remanded on attempted murder charge of Police Woman

A Beterverwagting man was today remanded to prison for the attempted murder of the mother of his two children.
The man Warren Denis appeared in the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul.
Denis was not required to plea to the indictable offence and will make his second court appearance on May 8.
Reports are that Denis a cane cutter chopped Police Constable Alana Hazel several times about her body. During the chopping the mother’s wrist was severed, she remains a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital. Residents in the community said on a number of occasions the man threatened to kill the woman.

 

 

Deeds and commercial registrar under investigation for financial irregularities

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum has confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Department is investigating financial improprieties at the Deeds and Commercial Registries that dates back to 2014.

 

Via telephone, with this newscast, the Crime Chief said the investigations started sometime last week and one person was questioned. The individual he said denied any wrongdoing. He also said that his department is looking to complete the matter as quickly as possible.

 

A release from the Office of Legal Affairs Ministry today said it forwarded the CID complaints of financial improprieties involving the acting Registrar of Deed and Commercial Registries Azeena Baksh.

 

According to the release, the Ministry staff members attached to the two registries accused the Registrar of paying herself gratuity which she was not entitled to since she is a pensionable employee.

 

Starting in 2014, she has been paying herself a higher salary that agreed to by the Judicial Service Commission.

 

The increases amounted to some $4.5 million. The Registrar is also being accused of unlawfully granting a waiver of 7,044,000 to a lawyer. The lawyer was said to have paid over to the Registry $8.5 million.
