Sophia Bread Vendor Killed

Sophia residents are this morning calling on Police to do everything they can to apprehend the killers of a bread vendor in the community.

The man, 42-years-old Andre Alexander was shot last night at approximately 20:30 hrs by bandits in the guise of customers.

The Police in a release this morning said based on initial investigations, Alexander was in the process of making change for $5,000 paid to him by one of two suspects for three loaves of bread. Soon after the pillion rider wiped out a gun and demanded cash from the deceased who refused, he was shot in the region of his stomach and relieved of his earnings. The suspects them made good their escape.

Alexander was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital but succumbed to his injuries about 23:00.

His mother Loretta Alexander, a retired Matron at the GPHC said she is trying to come to grips with her son’s senseless killing, given that for the past seven years he has he has been providing service to the community.

Teachers urged to keep up the fight to achieve objectives set by union-President Lyte

The remarks were made by the Union’s president Mark Lyte, during the May Day March. He said the union has been asking the powers that be for a long time now, to make the lives of teachers better. Lyte said so far, teachers were able to get some of the benefits the union was clamoring for, but the struggle continues.

He said debunching for teachers and a reasonable raise of pay for teachers are some outstanding issues that are still to be addressed.

Lyte said his union anxiously anticipates some closure in these matters.

Legal showdown looms over the GPSU elections, Presidential Candidate Gregory Gaspar said the results were rigged

GPSU presidential candidate Gregory Gaspar and his team were left in the dark, while the announcement was made in the presence of long-serving President of the Guyana Public Service Union, Patrick Yarde. Yarde was declared the winner of the elections.
Gaspar said even a common courtesy by the returning officer was not extended to him. He is crying foul and said the elections were rigged and stated that his team will take the necessary course of action to correct this injustice.

A member of Gaspar’s team released the figures from the ballots counted so far and said it had to take a miracle for Yarde to win the elections.

 

Police investigating fatal accident on EBD

A pensioner is the country’s latest road fatality. 70-year-old Suresh Mangru was killed in a suspected hit and run at Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara. The pensioner according to reports lived at Lot 35 Garden of Eden, EBD.
Reports are that the police were called to the scene after the body was discovered at the side of the road.

New Interim Horse Racing Authority elected

Businessman and horse racing executive, Poonai Bhiroog was elected president of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority at the election held at Phool Hall, West Coast Berbice on Sunday 30th April, 2017.

Bhiroog said his immediate task is to raise the standard of the sport and to attract more small stables to horse racing.

He sees horse racing as a good tourism event for Guyana and noted that from the sport can create employment.

Other members of the executives are 1st Vice President, Fazal Habibulla, 2nd Vice President, Dennis De Roop,3rd Vice President, Mohindra Persaud,
Secretary Godwyn Allicock, Treasurer, Francis Chichester, Assistant Sec/ Tres, Issac Dallo.
Committee Members- Nazrudeen Mohammed(Junior), Therbhuwan Jagdeo and Lakeram Sookdeo.

The Jockey’s representative is Alan Padmore while Colin Elcock is the Trainers Representatives and Zaheer Sheriff, Horse Owners Representatives.

The newly elected body replaced the Vic Oudit lead administration which has been inactive for a number of years. That body was able to compile the much needed Horse Racing Legislation which is still to be tabled in Parliament.

VIDEO: Ballot Boxes at GPSU under surveillance

While workers turned out in their numbers for the annual May Day Rally, some members and supporters of presidential candidate, Gregory Gaspar are keeping watch at the Union’s headquarters to ensure no mischief is afoot with the ballot boxes left in the building.

On the Rally long-serving president of the GPSU, Partick Yarde was a no show but members of his executives lead the GPSU contingent. Executive member, GPSU Vice-President, Mortimer Livan said Yarde was in New Amsterdam for the May Day Rally.

The man tipped to win the presidency, Gregory Gaspar said today is about those who struggled for betterment for the trade union movement.

 

 

 

Controversy erupted after the ballots were not counted following the completion of the elections on Thursday last.

Gaspar had some concerns regarding the process after the elections officer, Hermon DeSouza suspended the ballot counting until next Wednesday.

In Gaspar’s view, Yarde is calling all the shots but he (Yarde) has denied this claim that he has anything to do with the delay of the elections results. In fact, Yarde is confident that he would be reelected.

17-year-old school dropout being sought in murder of 16-year-old

Police are in search of a 17-year-old school drop who allegedly killed a sixteen-year-old student of the Covent Garden Secondary School, Brian Charles Yearwood. The victim was a resident of Grove, East Bank Demerara.

The police are reporting that at approximately 20:00 hrs on Saturday night in the compound of the Covent Garden Nursery School, the accused stabbed the deceased once to the region of his chest.

Both the victim and the deceased were said to be patrons at a concert held in the school’s compound. The accused who hails from Kaneville, East Bank of Demerara fled the scene soon after the incident. The deceased was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Pedal cyclist killed in ECD accident

A 25-year-old Good Hope, East Coast Demerara resident is in police custody assisting with the investigation into the death of a pedal cyclist on the Beterverwagting Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

Reports are that the young man said to be a businessman was driving motor car PRR 5263 on the northern side of the road when he collided with the so far unidentified pedal cyclist. It is claimed that the deceased rode into the path of the vehicle.

The police in a report said as a result of the impact, the pedal cyclist received head injuries, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

A breathalyzer test done on the driver showed that he was not under the influence of alcohol. The body of the pedal cyclist is at the Lyken Funeral Parlor awaiting identification.
