“Is best I kill myself, I ain’t able with this no more” Grey Boy tells court, as murder charge is dismissed against him for the third time

There was more drama in the court this afternoon in the ongoing trial of Regan “Grey Boy” Rodrigues, with City Magistrate Judy Latchman maintaining her ruling and discharging the matter for the third time.

Now this comes after a directive was sent to the Magistrate by the
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Shalimar Ali-Hack instructing her to commit the accused to stand trial. However, the Magistrate maintained that there is no evidence against Rodrigues for him to stand trial in the High Court for the murder of political activist, Courtney Crum-Ewing.

Given the opportunity to speak to the court, Rodrigues maintained that he was innocent and he knows nothing about Crum-Ewing’s death. He became emotional and asked, “how many times I have to prove myself innocent in this country.” He accused a senior policeman of planting the gun in his house and said he swam across the Demerara River.

According to him, the police know who killed Crum-Ewing and they should go and look for them. “Is best I kill meself, I aint able with this no more”.

Crum-Ewing was executed at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, on March 10th, 2015 while encouraging residents to vote against the then ruling Peoples’ Progressive Party (PPP/C).

‘Grey boy’ was arrested and charged with Crum-Ewing’s murder after the police found a gun in his Riverview, Ruimveldt house, it was later confirmed as the murder weapon.

He was later charged with murder but was subsequently freed by Magistrate Judy Latchman, September last, citing lack of evidence.

Labourer remanded to prison for the murder of Corentyne Pensioner.

“Grey Boy” not out of the woods just yet for the Courtney Crum-Ewing Murder

In a strange turn of events after murder charges were dismissed against Regan Rodrigues called Grey Boy, the Director of Public Prosecution Shalimar Ali-Hack has written to Magistrate Judy Latchman urging her to commit the accused to stand trial for the murder of Crum-Ewing.

Attorney at law Nigel Hughes via telephone said he took the letter to the magistrate and she refused to comply. This comes one day after the Magistrate Latchman discharged murder charges against Grey Boy for the second time.

On Monday, June  5, 2017, City Magistrate Judy Latchman in her ruling said there was absolutely no evidence linking Regal Rodrigues called Grey Boy to the killing of political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing.  The Magistrate’s ruling came after Assistant Superintendent of Police Mitchell Caesar refused to return to the stand to continue his testimony.

Director of Public Prosecution Shalimar Ali-Hack ordered murder charges be reinstituted against Rodrigues Murder charges were reinstituted against Rodrigues.

Fourteen (14) oral statements allegedly made by Rodrigues were admitted into evidence, but Magistrate Latchman said they did not implicate Rodrigues in the murder and there is no evidence that Rodrigues used the gun, pulled the trigger and shot Crum-Ewing.

March 10, 2015, Crum-Ewing was executed in the Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara where he was calling on residents to vote the former People’s Progressive Party Government out of office.
