CANU Head James Singh dismissed by Gov’t
Head of Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit, James Singh was sacked by the David Granger administration days after a Commission of Inquiry report into a Vessel was completed and its recommendations handed over to the President.
This disclosure was made by Minister of State Joseph Harmon at his Post-Cabinet Press Briefing today. Harmon posited that the Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan was given some guidelines by the President to convey to the long-serving head of CANU.
Singh was successful in the interception of a major drug bust in Guyana over the years. One of his success stories was the arrest and sequence sentence of a notorious drug Kingpin, Barry Dataram.
Bruce Lovell, the lone commissioner was tasked to look into the circumstances surrounding the entry into, the interception, detention and subsequent release of an unnamed private maritime vessel in the sea space of the territory of Guyana, on or between the 11th-14th of February 2017 and to report the findings and recommendations to His Excellency Brigadier David Granger.
Two days after that vessel was released, another vessel with four Guyanese were busted with 4.2tons of cocaine by US and Trinidadian coast guards.
The inquiry examined and made recommendations under which the customs anti-narcotics unit received information, including the exact date and time of the receipt of such information that the private maritime vessel entered into Guyana’s territory.
The commission also looked at instructions issued by the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit and the role of any foreign law enforcement agencies in the conduct of the operations to intercept, detain and search the said vessel.

VIDEO: GDF ranks points weapons at Capitol News Cameraman and others at Kaieteur National Park
Capitol News Cameraman, Rudolph Morris was flown to the city on Tuesday afternoon, two days after he was detained and had his camera and cellular phone taken by a Guyana Defence Force sergeant.
In a short video shot by Morris, it shows two men with high powered weapons pointing in the direction of Morris, Anthony Melville and another man in a boat. What is interesting is that neither of the two men wore military clothes, one man was half naked and no police were around the area at the time.
The GDF and the Police were posted to the area to prevent illegal mining around the Kaieteur National Park.
Anthony Melville said he was totally unaware that the men were members of the GDF, but took no chances and complied.
Melville who was a former toshao of Chenapau Village said they were not in breach of any security arrangements at the park.
The men were arrested by ranks of the Guyana Defence Force for videoing the area allegedly sealed off by the GDF to prevent illegal mining around the area. Morris said he was told he could leave the army base on Monday morning and had to journey by foot, some three hours in the trail, to get to his destination at the Kaieteur National Park.
Taxi driver jailed after pleading guilty to cocaine and illegal guns possession
Trevor Rodriguez, the taxi driver who police busted with over 20lbs of cocaine and several guns at his Duncan Street, Campbellville, Georgetown was this morning (June 13) sentenced to six years imprisonment after pleading guilty to the 1charges.
The 32-year-old was charged with having possession of 11 kilograms of cocaine and a 9mm pistol, a Glock 9mm and a 1.357 magnum revolver along with matching rounds when he was not the holder of a firearm license.
The jail terms, which will run concurrently, were handed down by Magistrate Annette Singh.
Police arrested Rodrigues and his wife Amanda Rodriguez after three illegal firearms, matching rounds and drugs were found at their home during a raid on May 26.
The court heard that Rodriguez is in the habit of threatening to kill his wife. On the day in question, he threatened to kill her with a gun at their Duncan Street home.
The woman called a co-worker who came to her rescue and also took away the gun from her husband.
Trevor Rodriguez also faced four other charges, two each for making use of threatening language and threatening behavior to his wife. However, these charges were dismissed.

As more details are unfolding about the arrest of Capitol News Cameraman, Rudolph Morris. This newscast understands that Capitol News’ Cameraman Rudolph Morris’s Cellular phone was taken by an army sergeant at the Kaieteur National Park. This was hours after he was arrested by ranks of the Guyana Defence Force for videoing the area sealed off by the GDF to prevent illegal mining around the area. Morris said he was told he could leave the army base this morning and had to journey by foot some three hours in the trail to get to his destination at the Kaieteur National Park.
The Guyana Press Association and Capitol News have been working behind the scenes to have the matter resolved speedily. Chief of Staff of the GDF, Patrick West has ensured the GPA that Morris will be flown out tomorrow afternoon, his rights will not be violated and the GDF will be taking care of his needs.
After listening to Morris’s story Capitol News has spoken to its lawyers and will be seeking legal advice against the GDF for wrongful detention of Morris.
