Thirty eight year old Odit Thom, of Number 4 Village, West Coast Berbice, was today charged with the murder of bartender, Marissa Fraser. Thom made his first court appearance before Magistrate Randell Weaver in the Fort Wellington Magistrates’ Court where he was not required to plea to the indictable offence.
The unrepresented Thom was sent to the National Psychiatric Hospital for an evaluation, after claiming that he was of unsound mind. He is expected to make his second court appearance on January 24, 2018.
Marissa Fraser’s body was discovered in trench on Monday by a passer-by sometime around 8:00 hrs. Her faced was covered in mud and was naked from the waist down. Reports are that her body bore several marks of violence.
A 47-year-old taxi driver and father of 6 was charged with the murder of Richard Ishmael School teacher, Kescia Branche.
The suspect, Matthew Munroe appeared before Chief Magistrate, Ann Mc Lennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court this afternoon to answer to the indictable charge. Branche succumbed to her injuries days after she was found unconscious at the corners of Princess Street and Louisa Row, Georgetown back in November.
Munroe was expressionless as he walked into the courtroom to answer the charge in the presence of members of the major crimes unit of the Guyana Police Force.

He was remanded to prison until January 9th, 2018. Police prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court that the file has to go back to the DPP for the chambers to complete outstanding work. Munroe was arrested just as he arrived in Guyana from the United States. The police had already detained his car as the probe intensified into the teacher’s murder. Attorney at law, George Thomas represented the accused and he told the court that his client was beaten and give a statement to sign, which he refused to sign.

The dreadful demise of the teacher sent shockwaves through the public education system with calls for the police to do a thorough investigation in the matter. Branche reportedly left a nightclub in the presence of two police constables who were both placed under close arrest and questioned as the probe intensified. The police also detained the father of the woman’s child but they were all released.
The Police in Berbice have detained three persons in connection with the murder of 23-year-old Marissa Fraser. Fraser who lived at lot 24 Public road, Number 4 Village was found in a trench next to a cemetery close to the backdam in the Number 5 Village with her face covered with mud and partly naked. According to a police report, a watchman who is among the three arrested has confessed to the brutal murder.
Berbice Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Linden Alves disclosed to the media on Monday that the body bore multiple stab wounds.

Timalin Thompson also called Bebi, one of the residents who made the discovery of the body said that she was carrying out her daily routine when it was brought to her attention by her cousin that the body of a female was in the nearby trench.

Niece of the dead woman, Indrawattie Totaram said her aunt told her that her reputed husband was going to kill her. The woman is now regretting that she did not take her aunt seriously. In this exclusive video Elizabeth Magermootoo recalled that her aunt asked her to take her cash and jewellery away from the house.
Police in Berbice are investigating a possible murder/suicide in Williamsburg on the Corentyne. Reports are that a husband allegedly murdered his wife and subsequently took his life. Details to come later.

A New Amsterdam mother is seeking the public’s assistance in locating her twelve-year-old daughter, who she claimed has been abducted and is being held as a sex slave.
The concerned explained that her daughter went missing on June 16 last.
There are reports that two girls, ages 12 and 13 were abducted. The girls were allegedly taken without their parents’ consent by a female vendor of the New Amsterdam market.
The thirteen-year-old has since returned home but the police have said her account of what transpired is not adding up.
The thirteen-year-old claims that she was asked by the vendor to accompany her to collect money owed to her father by the said vendor.
However, the teen said the car they were in stopped at a village along the East Bank, where she saw the woman’s son on a motorbike. The child claimed that she was forced to get on the motorbike and taken to Mara, where she was bound and then transported to a camp along the Berbice River. There she saw another school friend.
Meanwhile, a 13-year-old girl said she was kidnapped by a woman who allegedly moved her from the New Amsterdam Market under the pretext that they were going to collect money that the woman had for the girl’s father. She claims that the car stopped at a village along the East Bank where the woman’s son was waiting with a motorbike. She was forced to get onto the motorbike and taken to Mara and tied with a rope and then taken to a camp situated along the Berbice River, where she saw another school friend.
The teen said the Camp was nothing more than four sticks and a tarpaulin. The child said she was repeatedly raped by one man at the camp. That she was forced to pick marijuana leaves and was given one meal per day. The meal she was said tennis roll and a cup of tea.
However, the child’s father said she disappeared from the market at approximately 5:00 hrs. and not in the afternoon as the teen claims. The child, he said accompanied him to the market to conduction business. The child should have returned home to prepare for school.
