Fisherman murders drinking partner

The Police in a report said that the two men were imbibing when an argument ensued.
 During the altercation, the victim allegedly injured the suspect with a knife, the suspect retaliated by physically assaulting the victim who subsequently died.
The victim has been identified as Sahadeo Sankar, 40 years, of no fixed place of abode, but the Police say he hailed from the Corentyne District.
The suspect who is said to be a fisherman of  Crabwood Creek has been taken into custody for the murder and has since confessed to the crime.
The Police report said that the incident occurred around 03:00hrs this morning on the Crabwood Creek Public Road.
According to the police, the entire ordeal was captured on a nearby Close Circuit Television (CCTV) camera. The body is presently at the Skeldon Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police constables under close arrest over rape allegations

Two Police constables based at the Turkeyen Police Station are currently under close arrest as senior police officers commenced a probe into a rape allegation made by a woman from the Sophia Community.

 Speaking with this newscast Commander of ‘C’ Division, Calvin Brutus said the woman came to the station on the 1st of January, 2018 to make a report and asked to use the washroom at the Station when the two constables allegedly committed the act.

The Commander said upon receiving the allegation the investigating team took all the necessary steps and got all the statements.  Brutus said the report is now in its final stages and will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for advice.

 The Commander said it is a disappointment to the Guyana Police Force.

Pensioner Killed in road accident.

The woman was identified as Joycelyn Joseph, 72 years old of YY Bent Street, Wortmanville.
 According to the woman’s daughter Shirley Joseph, her mother was on her way to the Bourda Post Office to collect her pension when she was struck down by a speeding car.
 The accident occurred just around 4:30 this morning at the intersection of Winter Place on Brickdam.
The police are reporting that as a result of the impact the pedestrian was reportedly dragged about thirty-nine meters; the vehicle came to a halt some one hundred and fifty-eight meters from the point of impact as recorded by investigators.
A breathalyser test was administered to the driver and no alcohol was detected on his breath; he is currently in custody assisting with the investigation.
According to the  police  motorcar PLL 2838 which was being driven by a 35-year-old labourer of ‘A’ Field Sophia, Greater, Georgetown was proceeding east along the Brickdam Public Road allegedly at a fast rate, anticipated passing the stop light at the intersection of Winter Place since the light was reportedly showing “green” with a few seconds remaining and in the process struck down the pedestrian who was said to be crossing the road from south to north. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Emergency Medical personnel.
The post-mortem will be done tomorrow.

 

SWAT Team Commander Accused of Smuggling Alcohol

Commander of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit – Motie Dookie is currently under investigation for smuggling of alcohol.

The Police in this morning said it was conducting an investigation involving a Deputy Superintendent of Police who is Commander of the SWAT was in a minibus last night on the Whim Public Road, Corentyne when it was stopped by the police anti-crime patrol. A search of the vehicle unearthed thirty cases of Whiskey.

According to the release, the officer and the driver of the minibus were the only occupants of the vehicle. Initial reports, the SWAT Team Commander told ranks that the whiskey was to be used for a party. The Officer who is based at Police Headquarters was not permitted by this Commander Officer to leave Georgetown.

 

Senior cop busted with over 30 cases of Johnny Walker

A senior Police officer is in hot water after he was busted with over 30 cases of “Johnny Walker”  Whiskey at a Police roadblock at Whim on the Corentyne Berbice.
The officer was identified as Motie Dookie, Deputy Superintendent of Police and he was recently appointed as Head of the Special Weapons and Tactics unit
(SWAT) replacing Lonsdale Withrite who was removed from the post after his gun was stolen during a robbery.
There are reports that after the Police corporal and other ranks stopped and searched the senior officer’s vehicle and found the items, he allegedly told them that the liquor was for a Police Old Year’s night function to be held today, but after checking, it was revealed that his story was false.
Police sources told this newscast that now the Enforcement arm of the Guyana Revenue Authority will be called in to investigate the matter and could call upon the officer to produce the documentation for the Liquor. In recent times, the GRA and the Guyana Police Force have stepped up the fight against smuggling across our porous borders.
The senior police officer is in custody as the investigation continues.

 

Salt fish remanded for murder

A friendship, Corentyne man was today remanded to prison for the murder of a fellow villager. The man, Suresh Persaud called Salt Fish appeared in the Springlands Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh, where he was not required to plea to the indictable charge.

 

 

Salt Fish according to reports between December 23 and 24, 2017 murdered 47-year-old, Radesh Sukram, a labourer also of Friendship Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

After the discovery of the body, police according to reports arrested the suspect who confessed to the crim. The matter has since been transferred to the Whim Magistrates’ Court, where ‘Salt Fish’ will make his second court appearance on January 8, 2018.

Video: Teen caught stealing in Sophia beaten by residents

It is the season of giving and sharing and a teen who was caught red-handed was given a sound thrashing before he was handed over to the police. This was after he and his accomplice broke into a home in Sophia and held up a family at knifepoint while demanding cash and other valuables.

During the ordeal, the grandmother of the home was chopped on her right hand as she fought off the bandits.

Before escaping, his accomplices helped themselves to leftover black and sponge cake leaving their partner in crime behind. He is now in custody while the others are being sought.

NCN’s CEO resigns

There are more changes taking place at the National Communications Network (NCN) and this online news site understands that Chief Executive Officer, Lennox Cornette was asked to resign from his position. He agreed and submitted his letter on Wednesday(December 27).
There are reports that Cornette’s resignation takes effect from January 15, 2018. He was appointed by the Bishwa Panday led board back in May 2016. His appointment came with much controversy following his questionable actions on a previous job.
Concerns have been mounting about the direction in which NCN is heading under his leadership and that may have influenced his sudden resignation.

Police are probing a hit and run accident that left a motorcyclist in a critical state at the Georgetown Public Hospital. The accident occurred at the corners of Middle and Carmichael Streets minutes ago.
The cyclist has been identified as Troy Ridley. An Investigation is in progress. We will bring you more details as it becomes available.
