Contentious parking meter bylaws passed by City Council

City Hall successfully moved a motion to implement the parking meter bylaws despite strong objection by Councilor Malcolm Ferreira. Ferreira called for caution until the court ruling on the matter. However, by the end of his appeal to the council, the majority of the councilors voted for the bylaws.
 

Just Call Me Boss convincingly beat Vera’s Finally in the feature C, Class and Lower event of the Triple Crown Horse Race Meeting first leg at the Port Mourant Turf Club.

The one mile race lived up to the hype with Vera’ s Finally starting as favourite and Boss tipped to bring second, but it was the early pace of Prince She Is Not that set up the race for the “Boss” who came with a late flourish to beat Princess She Is Not for 2nd and Vera’ s Finally, Jack in my style finished 4th. For Boss, it was a sweet homecoming as he won the Banks DIH $1 million dollar 1st Prize and Trophy. Tajmohan Jagdeo said Just Call Me Boss did well at Practice and he expected him to come out on top. He had kind words for the owners of Vera’s Finally who he feels will rebound and make the race more exciting next time around. It was Vera’s First loss since arriving in Guyana and already the betting boys are looking forward to the 2nd leg of the Triple Crown at the Rising Sun Turf Club on April 29th.

Developing story: House gutted in number 45 Village Corentyne Berbice fire.

 

Four persons are now homeless following a fire at #45 Village, Corentyne Berbice.
Ganesh Boodhoo owns the house and lived there with his family of four. He said at the time of the fire he was at his mother’s house at number 59 village, when he got a call informing him that his house was on fire. He estimated his losses to be in the millions.


There are reports that the Guyana Fire Service was slow in their response to the scene, despite repeated calls from residents. This angered residents, many of whom visibly vented their disgust.

Security guard’s battered body found at Rose Hall worksite

The Police have since detained seven persons for the Saturday night murder of the Sukhram’s General Store and Agro Chemicals security guard. Some of those arrested are employees of the business place. The business is located on the Rose Hall public Road.
On Sunday five males and two females were placed in a police vehicle while the lawmen processed the crime scene.
The dead man was identified as Prem Monien, 53, of Clifton Settlement Port Mourant. He reportedly met his demise after he came face to face with the suspects just after 19:30 Saturday night. The Police are working on the theory that it was an inside job. There are reports that he was badly beaten about his body and his throat was slit.

He succumbed to his injuries on the scene. The business place was ransacked and over $1.5 million dollars was reportedly taken from the store.

American Airlines to commence flights to Guyana  from December 2018

Already the move is being met with excitement from Guyana’s Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson. In a release from the Department of Public Information the minister said he was delighted that American Airlines is set to commence flying to Guyana in December. The statement said this will coincide with the launch of the newly expanded Cheddi Jagan International Airport and demonstrates a confidence in Guyana not only as a desirable tourist destination, but also as an emerging oil economy as well. According to the DPI release, the government has been working at various levels to provide more options to travelers to and from Guyana to North America with increased airlift and American Airlines’ commitment to destination and this is a recognition of government’s work since coming into office in 2015.”

Fly Jamaica Crew Member busted with nine pounds of cocaine taped to his legs at JFK airport 

The man was caught with $160,000 worth of cocaine taped to his legs.
In a report coming out of PIX 11 in New York which stated that Hugh Hall was arrested on March 17th after Customs and Border Protection officers found four packages of cocaine under his pants, a CBP spokesperson said. He allegedly had about nine pounds of cocaine taped to his legs.
“This seizure is another example of our CBP officers being ever vigilant in protecting the United States from the distribution of illicit drugs,” Acting Director of CBP’s New York Field Operations Leon Hayward said.
Hall is expected to face federal narcotics smuggling charges soon.
