Police are investigating an attempted robbery under arms which occurred this morning in front of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Brickdam.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 10:15 hrs and involved two elderly brothers, an 81‑year‑old pensioner and his 79‑year‑old sibling, both of Robb Street. The brothers, according to the police, were on their way to conduct business when they were approached by two suspects on a bicycle. One was armed with a knife while riding the bicycle, as the other tried to snatch a haversack from one of the brothers.
An alarm was raised, drawing the attention of bystanders. It is reported that during the commotion, a 25-year-old licensed firearm holder who was nearby discharged his weapon in the direction of the suspects. A 13‑year‑old boy from Albouystown was struck and collapsed at the scene, while the second suspect managed to escape.
Emergency Medical Technicians quickly responded, and the injured teen was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. He is being treated for a gunshot wound to his buttocks area.
Police say CCTV cameras in the area are being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation. The licensed firearm has been secured and lodged as evidence.
Authorities continue to probe the matter, urging members of the public to remain vigilant and assist with any information that could lead to the apprehension of the second suspect.
