Father of 7 was sentenced to prison for marijuana possession

The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Judy Latchman this morning in the Georgetown Magistrates’ court.

Stanley Pile, of Norton Street, pleaded guilty to ownership of the 75lbs of marijuana busted last Sunday by CANU ranks.

CANU prosecutor, Konyo Sandiford told the court that on the day in question, ranks went to Pile’s home where a search was conducted in the upper flat of a makeshift room.

In that room three carton boxes and two barrels packed with wrapped packages of compressed marijuana was found.

After accepting ownership, the father of seven told CANU investigators that the illicit substance was given to him by a man who resides over the river.

The customs anti-narcortics unit is currently in search of the man.

In addition to the 4 year sentence, Pile was fined 30,000 dollars.

 

“Tear drop” slapped with robbery under arms charge

Aspiring music performer, Leon Clarke called “Tear Drop” was on Wednesday (September 13) slapped with a robbery under arms charge.

It is alleged that the West La Penitence, Georgetown man on September 8 at Independence Boulevard, East La Penitence, he broke into a shop and relieved the owner Vincent Howard of cash, phone cards, and scratch card valued over $1M.

When the charge was read by Magistrate Fabayo Azore Clarke, Clarke, 23, broke down in tears and pleaded not guilty, stating that he is not a thief but an entertainer and writer. He added that his image will now be tarnished.

His Attorney Keoma Griffith, in his application for bail, stated that when his client heard of the allegation he presented himself to police.

Bail was granted in the sum of $75,000 to the accused. He was told to return to court on October 4.

Man taken off Canada bound flight busted with cocaine

A cocaine mule destined for Canada was nabbed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport by ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) on Tuesday.

The drug enforcement agency in a release said the Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara suspect was escorted to a city hospital where he was medically examined and admitted. Tuesday night the agency said the man had excreted some 86 of the more than 100 cocaine filled pellets he had ingested. The man remains under observation at the hospital.

CANU said it is important to note that these practices are hazardous to the health of the intended trafficker and can gravely compromise lives.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum on leave replaced by Budhram

The Guyana Police Force has made some changes to facilitate the substantive Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum proceeding on accumulated and as of Monday F Division Commander, Senior Superintendent Rabindranauth Budhram took over the managing of Criminal Investigation Department.

Blanhum who was instrumental in solving many high profile cases is proceeding on leave at a time when the Guyana Police Force is reporting an 11% reduction in serious crime. He was one of the high ranking police officers who recently testified before the Commission of Inquiry into the alleged assassination plot against President David Granger.

 

The finding of that report revealed that they were some deficiencies within the Police Force. The President received the findings of the Paul Slowe led commission but noted that the report has not gone to Cabinet as yet for deliberation.

 

According to the president, the retired assistant commissioner of Police has made some strong recommendations. It was revealed at the commission that there appears to be a rift within the top brass of the Guyana Police Force.

Cousin in custody as the police probe suspected arson death

The Police and Fire Service officials were back at the burnt out building this morning taking pictures and statements from residents about the fire, which claimed the life of Sean Prince. Prince’s father who operates a shipping agency here in Guyana, but resides overseas owns the Nabacalis/ Golden Grove building.

Prince’s close friends said the man was in their company at a shop watching the Guyana/Jamaica match and left for home afterwards. Shortly after they recalled an alarm being raised that the house was on fire. Prince who lived in the upper flat of the house was trapped not far from the door. His cousin who lived at the bottom flat managed to escape from the burning building. It’s unclear how the fire started at this time, but the Police have since detained Prince’s cousin for questioning.

Prince’s friend described him as very easy going and quiet and said it was after some time, that they caught up last night, to watch the cricket match.

His cousin says it was just around 1:00 am when they were called to the scene, but through all the confusion he never thought that Sean was still in the building at the time.

The Guyana Fire service is working to ascertain the origin of the fire as the investigations are continuing.

Sophia man charged for niece’s murder

The 18-year-old man was hauled before the court for the murder of his 18-month-old  niece who he tossed through a window, then placed a pile of wood on top of her body.

The suspect, Sherwin Roberts appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, this afternoon in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was not required to plea to the indictable charge.

 

There are reports that the man committed the vicious act after he tried to relieve the child of her earrings after breaking into his brother’s house. That incident occurred on September 1st.

He was remanded to prison until September 25th when the matter will be called again. In the meantime, Roberts was placed under the supervision of a probation officer until the completion of a preliminary inquiry into the matter.

Little Ronasha was at the time asleep with her two brothers at their A Field Sophia home when her uncle broke into the house and committed the horrific act.

“Varswyk used his military training to give Royden Williams cover to escape” – Police

Head of Operations of the Guyana Police Force, Clifton Hicken said over the past two weeks the joint services were on the trail of two of the Camp Street prison escapees, Urie Varswyk and Royden Williams.

He said the security services received intelligence information and immediately responded and further increased its presence in the Mining Town of Linden.

Varswyk was shot dead in an exchange of gunshots with the joint services. Hicken said Varswyk used his military experience to give Williams cover to escape.

Hicken is assuring the public that the joint services will recapture Williams, who he still believes is still in Linden.

He said the focus is now to get Williams, and the joint services has intensified its presence on the East Bank and East Coast Corridors.

Escapees were staying a stone’s throw from the Police Station

Prison escapees Urie Varswyck and Royden Williams were hiding out a stone’s throw from the Amelia’s Ward Police Outpost in this shack allegedly owned by, Linden Orin Gordon known as ‘Priest,’ who is currently in custody assisting with investigations.

Earlier ex-policeman Teon Allen was arrested and charged with harbouring the fugitives. Residents said Gordon along with the escapees were sharing the shack.

 

Ex- Policeman Urie Varswyck, who was on remand for murder was shot and killed by joint service ranks, but Williams managed to escape. Residents said they were forced to lay low as the area sounded like a war zone.

One resident said on one occasion she saw a strange looking man at the house but when she made eye contact, he hid.

This morning the Joint Service ranks were back in Amelia’s Ward searching an abandoned house for the other escapee, Royden Williams. That search came up empty handed.

However, the police are maintaining a heavy presence on the Linden Soesdyke Highway while the joint service was busy in and around the mining town looking for Williams who is said to be the mastermind behind the recent Camp Street jail Break and fire. Williams or Royden Durant called Smallie, was convicted for the 2008 Barticia Massacre where 12 persons were killed.

Full statement on joint service operation which resulted in the death of Varswyck

Acting Police Commissioner David Ramnarine early this morning confirmed that a Joint Services intelligence led operations was conducted in Linden last evening which resulted in prison escapee Uree Varswyck being mortally wounded. At approximately 23:45hrs Varswyck and Mark Royden Durant aka Smallie were seen together in the Central Amelia’s Ward area. The duo open fire on the joint Services who returned fire which resulted in Varswyck, who was dressed in a military vest and boots, being fatally wounded. A 9mm pistol and 40 live rounds along with a backpack and cloth bag were found near his body. The bag contained toiletteries, medical supplies and a gas mask. A relentless pursuit aimed at the capture of Durant continues. Acting Commissioner Ramnarine expressed thanks to residents who have provided information to the Guyana Police Force.
