Nephew kills uncle over cell phone

Police are investigating the murder of 39-year-old Olrick Da Costa, of Public Road Sommerset, Essequibo Coast. The man was stabbed at his home Sunday morning reportedly by his 26-year-old nephew.

According to a statement from the Police, the uncle and his nephew had an argument over a stolen cell phone when the Da Costa (uncle) reportedly assaulted the suspect (nephew) who in retaliation stabbed him in the abdomen with a knife.

Da Costa was rushed to the Charity Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination.

The alleged murder weapon was recovered.

Corentyne labourer commits suicide

Sixty-two-year-old Ramlall Tajenarain called ‘Dovie’ of Crabwood Creek Corentyne allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself.

The labourer reportedly took his life between Friday and Saturday at the home he shared with his wife.

Sobhadrawattie Tajenarain called ‘Chico’ a school vendor told police that her husband was an alcoholic who was on a downward spiral for the past three weeks. She added that he was in the habit of threatening to commit suicide.

The woman last saw him Friday night after he went to his room which is situated on the upper flat of their two-storey house where he normally sleeps alone because of his drinking habit.

The next morning, she went to check on him but noticed that he was not opening the bedroom door and it bolted from inside.

She then peeked through a window and saw he was in a stooping position on his bed with a black canvass rope around his neck which was tied to a wooden crossbar of another window in the room.

The police were summoned who then prised open the room door and saw the body.

The body was then photographed, taken down from the wooden bar and examined for marks of violence, non-were seen. It was then taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty. His body is presently at the Skeldon mortuary awaiting Post Mortem.

A 41-year-old man of No. 28 Village, West Coast Berbice is the country’s latest road fatality, according to police.

The bicycle that Joel Jacobs rode when he met his demise

Pedal cyclist Joel Jacobs was riding along the Onverwagt road Saturday afternoon when he was struck down by a hire car driver. The man who was driving the vehicle has not been identified by name as yet but is a 27-year-old who resides at El Dorado Village.

The driver and cyclist were heading in opposite directions when the unfortunate incident occurred.
The driver told police that as he approached a bridge in the village, the cyclist suddenly swerved and came into contact with his car.

As a result of the impact, the cyclist fell, he was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to Fort Wellington Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver and no alcohol was detected; he is presently in custody assisting with the investigation.

Man remanded to prison for murder father-in-law

A twenty-seven-year-old man was today remanded to prison for the murder of his father-in-law. The man Adacena Benjamin, of Kuratuku, Cyuni River appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus to answer to the capital offence.

Attorney-at-Law Dexter Todd told the court that he was defending himself after he was being attacked by his inlaws.

However, Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told that the court that Lewis was chopped after he intervened in a domestic violence issue between Benjamin and his daughter. Benjamin who became annoyed armed himself with a cutlass and chopped Lewis to his left which resulted in his death.

Benjamin who will return to court on January 28, is expected to face additional charges which include injuries he inflicted on his brother-in-law.

Lewis hails from Lima Essequibo Coast but lived and operated a shop in the community.

 

Two wanted for murder of Corentyne brothers on old year’s night

The Guyana Police Force today issued wanted bulletins for two Corentyne residents for the December 31 murder of the Samaroo Brothers.

The two have been identified as Yougendra Jeenarine and Kelvin Shivgobin. The Police today said that the men are wanted for questioning in relation to the murder of Harricharran and Premcharran Samaroo on December 31.

Yougendra Jeenraine, said to be 28 years old, of Bushlot Corentyne is said to be of mixed ancestry while Kelvin Shivgobin is 32-year-old of Belvedere Corentyne and his ethnicity was given as East India.

The Police are asking that anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the two men to please make contact with the nearest police station.

Harricharran & Premcharran Samaroo were murdered on old year’s night, last year during a home invasion at their mother’s Buslot home. The bandits also took an undisclosed amount of cash while other relatives were beaten in the bandits’ quest for cash and valuables.

Unidentified remains found on Soesdyke Linden Highway 

Persons in the area stumbled on the body Sunday morning and immediately alerted the police.
The body was found in the vicinity of the first bus shed at Kuru Kururu.
Police sources said there were marks of violence about the body.
The remains are still to be identified. Police investigations are ongoing.
