‘Country Side’ Cinema goes up in flames

A fire of unknown origin has destroyed ‘Country Side’ Cinema at No. 64 Village Corentyne, Berbice. The facility has been out of operation for some time now.

The fire spread to a house next door and according to persons on the scene firefighters are out of the water and unable to quell the flames. The person who owns the house next door is reportedly overseas.

The fire started around 1:20 pm and about 20 minutes later the fire spread to the second building which is stilling burning.

Dismissed Rusal workers block Berbice River

Even as Rusal continues to hold firm on its position to rescind the termination of the 61 employees, the workers are stepping up the pressure on the company.

The angry workers blocked the Berbice River leading to the Aroraima location of the company. Now this move will prevent the company from moving Bauxite to the area for export.

The workers placed rope and drums with reflectors to prevents accidents.

Several government ministers including Social Protection Ministers Amna Ally and Keith Scott met with the company’s senior management to discuss getting the workers reinstated but the company continues to hold firm to its decision.

Rusal’s management rejected the workers’ union and are of the belief that the workers should not have taken industrial action over the 1% salary increase. The company has also said that it is likely that more workers could be on the breadline.

Berbice businessman among four arrested with stolen articles and ‘weed’

Ranks of the force’s Narcotics Branch in Berbice were on Wednesday involved in a four-hour search operation in several villages of New Amsterdam and East Canje which led to the arrest of four persons with narcotics and items suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.

At Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje a businessman was arrested with 313 grams of cannabis.

A search of a house in St. John’s Street, New Amsterdam, unearthed 377 grams of cannabis and 15 grams of cocaine; three males have been taken into custody.

Finally, a male resident of Howard’s Alley, New Amsterdam was arrested after a search of his premises revealed a quantity of suspected stolen items and several suspected fake business stamps and a passport; he is assisting with the investigation.

The operations were spearheaded by a Senior Superintendent and twenty other ranks.
