Minister of Public Health Hon. Volda Lawrence this morning confirmed the 12th death in Guyana as a result of COVID-19 complications.
The deceased is an 87 year old male, Mr. Daymon John of the Palms Geriatric Home. Mr. John passed early this morning.
The ministry and Government of Guyana express deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. John and urge all Guyanese to continue observing all measures, particularly social distancing, thorough hand washing and the wearing of face masks.
The dead woman was identified as Sabita Sookhoo age 20 of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara. There are reports that she was a passenger in the mini-bus involved in the accident.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has identified the two Foreign Service Officers who will act as the contact persons for Guyanese overseas who have been granted re-entry to Guyana and Guyanese who are overseas who are desirous of applying for re-entry.
The officers are Comica Johnson and Nacifa Watson from the Protocol and Consular Affairs Department within the Ministry.

Persons are still obligated to fill out their application form online. They can access the form on the ministry’s website – https://www.minfor.gov.gy/wp-
After submission of their applications, they will receive confirmation of receipt of the application and confirmation of an intended date of travel.
However, persons are being asked not to make any travel arrangements without approval from the government.
Importantly, completion of the form by individuals indicates that those persons have agreed with all the requirements for re-entry. All approvals for re-entry will be done in a phased manner considered appropriate by the Ministry of Public Health.
Further, persons entering Guyana will have to follow protocols established by the Public Health Ministry.
Returning Guyanese will be subjected to quarantine for two weeks either at the public quarantine facility or a private facility designated by the Ministry. Those private facilities will be located at the Baracara Hotel and Brandsville Apartments.
The Ministry is drawing attention to the fact that all services provided by the public facilities are free. Persons who wish to be housed at a private facility will have to stand the expense.
The protocols are deemed necessary to slow the spread of the virus as Guyana has now recorded 139 confirmed cases of the coronavirus this is inclusive of 11 deaths and 67 recoveries as of May 27.
The Ministry of Public Health has reported that the number of persons who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus now stands at 139 as two new cases have been confirmed.
To date, 1,499 tests have been conducted yielding 1,360 negative results.
Of the 139 persons testing positive for the virus, 66 are in isolation at various facilities across Guyana while two are in institutional quarantine and two others remain in the COVID-19 ICU at the GPHC.
A total of 62 recoveries and 11 deaths have been recorded.
Globally, there are a total of 5,304.772 cases with 342,029 deaths while in the Region of the Americas the total number of cases is 2, 395,295 with 141,472 deaths.
Guyanese are asked to take every precaution necessary, particularly in Hinterland Regions, border communities and hotspots.
Everyone is asked to always practice social distancing in the workplace, public spaces, and while using public transportation to reduce the spread of the coronavirus disease. They are also reminded to practise frequent hand washing/sanitising and always wear a face mask if they have to go out.
