Shopkeeper shot dead by Police SWAT member at Dartmouth

A protest erupted at Dartmouth Essequibo this morning following the death of a villager by a member of the Guyana Police Force SWAT team.

Dead is Orin Boston. The 29 year old shopkeeper was shot dead this morning at his home in front of his family.
Residents are aggrieved by the killing of the unarmed man by the police and burned debris, tyres and blocked the road in protest. These were some of the scenes coming out of Essequibo.
Prior to this incident, the police had not listed Boston as a high profile criminal or even indicated that he was wanted for any offense, hence many found it strange when members of the Police SWAT team descended on the man’s premises in the wee hours of the morning. It’s unclear how the man met his demise.
By mid-morning, the Guyana Police Force had issued their version of the event.  According to the Police ranks, ranks were conducting an anti-crime operation in the Police Regional Division 2 during which, at about 04:40 hrs today (Wednesday September 15, 2021), they went to the home of 29-year-old shopkeeper Orin Boston of Dartmouth, Essequibo, to conduct a search.
Further, the police report added that during the search, there was a confrontation between Orin Boston and the police resulting in him being shot to his upper left arm. Orin Boston was rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Commissioner of Police (ag.) Mr. Nigel Hoppie, DSM, has instructed that ranks from the Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) commence, immediately, a thorough investigation into this matter.
